Amsterdam - Heineken Hoek

Leidseplein is een essentiële ontmoetingsplek in Amsterdam, levendig met zowel de lokale bevolking als bezoekers.

Momenteel wordt er een nieuw gebouw gebouwd dat de charme van dit historische plein beïnvloedt. Wij zijn van mening dat het voorgestelde ontwerp niet geschikt is voor zo'n prominente locatie en het risico met zich meebrengt de schoonheid van het plein aan te tasten. Bovendien zou het een precedent kunnen scheppen voor onaantrekkelijke ontwikkelingen in historische gebieden.

Hoewel we het huidige project niet kunnen veranderen, biedt de uitgebreide mediaverslaggeving een kans om een dialoog te starten over het type architectuur dat we wensen in onze steden. Ons doel is om het belang van het behoud van schoonheid in stadsontwerp te benadrukken en steun te vergaren voor meer esthetisch aantrekkelijke architectuur in Amsterdam. Naar onze mening biedt deze competitie de prachtige kans om Amsterdam te laten zien wat nog meer mogelijk is!

Project omschrijving

Leidseplein, also known as Leiden Square, is a vital gathering spot in Amsterdam, lively with locals and visitors.

Currently, a new building is under construction, impacting the charm of this historic square. We believe the proposed design is unsuitable for such a prominent location and risks compromising the square's beauty. Moreover, it may set a precedent for unattractive developments in historic areas.

While we can't alter the current project, the extensive media coverage provides an opportunity to spark a conversation about the type of architecture we desire in our cities. Our aim is to highlight the importance of preserving beauty in urban design and to garner support for more aesthetically pleasing architecture in Amsterdam. In our view, this competition is a unique opportunity to show Amsterdam what else is possible!

Peter Drijver

Director & Architect at Scala Architecten

Peter Drijver is architect at Scala Architecten in The Hague, the Netherlands. He has extensive experience as an architect and has been chair of SOS Den Haag, an organisation in The Hague that fights to preserve its historic beauty & urban integrity.

Nadia Everard

President of La Table Ronde l'Architecture

Nadia Everard is a builder based in Bruges, formerly Brussels, where she leads the organisation La Table Ronde d'Architecture together with Noé Morin. She has extensive experience with the organisation of counter proposal competitions, and has been doing a lot of great work in Belgium. She is chair of the Belgium chapter of INTBAU.

Walther Schoonenberg

Architectural Historian & Secretary at the VVAB

Walther Schoonenberg is secretary of the organisation 'Friends of the Amsterdam Inner City' (Vereniging Vrienden van de Amsterdamse Binnenstad, or VVAB). Walther is an architectural historian and has been passionately defending Amsterdam from architectural violations such as the one we are now seeing at Leidseplein.

Pablo Alvarez Funes is an experienced architect based in London, UK, currently working at Katherine Pooley Ltd, after having worked at Stanhope Gate Architecture as Associate Director for many years. He is also Director of Education at the Classic Planning Institute.

Wolbert Vroom

Owner of Architectural Firm Vroom

From an appropriate 17th-century setting, Wolbert works with great pleasure on the conservation and renovation of historic houses in and around Amsterdam. After studying Architecture in Delft, he started his own firm in 1988. In his leisure time, Wolbert Vroom enjoys old and rare architecture books.
